Mucosal adhesion
This is where the ‘collar’ underneath the head attaches to the head. This is a minor issue only. If left, it will always resolve with time but may take until your son is 7 years or older to peel away from the head. It is always a good idea to let me know if you notice this, I often advise that I see your son so that I can address the issue.
Skin bridge
This is where there is a loss of ‘collar’ underneath the head and shaft skin attaches to the head. This requires attention promptly, so if you notice it, please let me know.
Skin tag
There is very often a little lump of skin on the underside in the midline. Any lump will improve with time, but occasionally it remains a cosmetic issue and I can arrange to remove it. I would usually wait a number of months to do this.
Hypospadias
This is an anatomical variation where the hole that is normally at the very tip of the penis is situated on the underside. If this is identified before circumcision, I do not carry out the procedure.
Buried penis
Sometimes, after a circumcision, the head can be covered by shaft skin. This is usually managed without any particular treatment, but may need some manipulation of the skin of the shaft of the penis.
Not suitable
There are various anatomical variabilities that when I examine your son beforehand I may decide he is not a suitable candidate for circumcision. If this is the case, I will explain all options open to you.
